Youth Day in South Africa "The Day of the African Child" has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity. It honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976 on that day. The day is celebrated in order to recognize the role of youth in the liberation of South Africa from the Apartheid regime.
The Youth Day in South Africa is celebrated in memory of all the youngsters who lost their lives during the protest, especially the death of Hector Pieterson, a 12 year old student who was killed during the uprising. The day is celebrated with musical concerts around the country in order to celebrate the energy of youth. It was the Soweto Uprising which laid the grounds for the release of Nelson Mandela and the end of the Apartheid regime in the country.
House Music was a part of the soundtrack of social change and was the underground answer to the chains of restriction imposed by the Dutch/British minority who occupied South Africa through the system of apartheid. In fact, the Bronx, the South Side of Chicago and Southern Africa were all united by the stank of disenfranchisement and the electronic music inspired by the lived reality of people in all three places amplified the inequalities that connected black people around the world.
As you already know, New York is a special city with many great events for residents and visitors throughout the year. On Saturday May 17th 2014 Let'em entertainment is launching a new nightlife platform "AFRO TAKES NYC " - as a catalyst for New York's performing arts scene and to bring Southern African house music & New Yorkers back together after years of neglect.
